| Celebrating
the Feminine in Nature We live in a patriarchal society driven
by the negative values of greed, violence, conquest and the belief that
science has all the answers. The consumer lifestyle that these values
have spawned is non-sustainable. During the next 30 years there will
be a mass extinction of species, the collapse of human society in many
countries, and 70% of what remains of the natural world will be destroyed.
We have become totally oblivious to any feeling of awe and reverence
for Nature, and live in utterly selfish disharmony within her vast,
finely balance inter-dependant web.
Along with many others, I feel we must apply the brakes in this mad
headlong rush to disaster, and embrace an alternative lifestyle that
will restore the balance between female and male values, as is so aptly
portrayed in the t'ai chi Taoist symbol of the yin and yang
- the two opposites, male and female, only forming a Whole when they
come together.
It is our task as individual human beings, women and men, to balance
the positive male and female values of love, compassion, joy and sensitivity
within ourselves. And in my own small way, while I shall most certainly
continue to paint our rapidly disappearing wilderness areas and the
wildlife they support, I also intend extending my painting repertoire
to explore the theme of 'Celebrating the Feminine in Nature' - an artistic
celebration on canvas of images of woman in harmony with her natural
surroundings. |
